🐳 Understanding your Child's Needs
Every child develops in their own unique way. Every child develops in their own unique way. Sometimes, though, something doesn’t quite feel right, and you may find yourself wondering if your child needs a little extra support.
At Orca OT, I provide gentle, evidence-based occupational therapy for babies and children. My approach is always play-based, family-centred and tailored to your child’s individual strengths and needs.

🧠 Sensory Processing & Regulation
Some children experience the world more intensely - or less intensely - than others. This can show up as:
🐳 Avoiding certain clothing, food textures or touch
🐳 Becoming overwhelmed in noisy or busy places
🐳Constantly moving, crashing or seeking movement
🐳Big emotional reactions that feel hard to manage
Through careful observation, discussion and, where appropriate, sensory assessments, I help you understand how your child processes everyday sensations and provide practical strategies to support regulation at home, in childcare or at school.
The goal: To help your child feel more comfortable, confident and calm in their daily world.
-
✏️ Developmental & Motor Skills
You might be noticing that your child is:
🐳Slower to reach developmental milestones
🐳Finding fine motor tasks tricky (drawing, using cutlery, buttons)
🐳Struggling with handwriting
🐳Appearing clumsy or less coordinated than peers
I use play-based developmental assessments and structured observation to understand your child’s strengths and areas that need support. Therapy advice and intervention focus on building skills in ways that feel fun, motivating and achievable.
The goal: To build confidence and independence through meaningful skill development.
-
🧩 Functional Daily Skills
Occupational therapy is all about helping children participate fully in everyday life.
Support may include:
🐳Dressing and self-care skills
🐳Feeding challenges
🐳Sleep routines
🐳Play and social participation
🐳Managing school or nursery routines
Rather than focusing only on isolated skills, I will look at how your child manages real-life activities and find practical ways to make those activities easier and more successful.
The goal: To make daily routines smoother for both you and your child.

🌊What Assessment Looks Like
If you’re unsure where to begin, assessment is often the first step.
This usually includes:
🐳A detailed parent conversation about your concerns and goals
🐳Play-based observation of your child (at nursery, school, home or clinic)
🐳Standardised assessments (where appropriate) - at nursery/school/home or clinic
🐳A clear feedback session
🐳A written report with practical recommendations
I take time to explain findings in clear, accessible language, with no jargon, so you leave feeling informed and empowered.
-
